J.Cole Interviews With Clutch City Magazine

double
1. HOW DID YOU LINK UP WITH JAY (JAY-Z)?
Through Mark Pitts, who is my manager now. And ummm…he managed me back in the day and ummm…yeah he introduced me to Jay and he heard “Lights Please” and the rest is ummm…history really.

2. WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I’m from North Carolina. Fayetteville, North Carolina.

3. WHAT TURN OF EVENTS MADE YOU SAY, “DAMN, I MADE IT?”
Umm I was always…naw naw when it actually felt real was probably when I was sitting in the room with Jay (Jay-Z) for the first time, or the first time I had like a big meeting. That’s when I was like, “Yeah I’m getting close.” Ya know what I’m saying?

4. WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES AND WHY?
I gotta say Tupac just because of the passion that he had and the shit he used to rap about like real everyday topics. And with him it’s like no matter where you from, you can relate I mean at least to the pain aspect. And lyrically the Nas’s, Jay’s, and the Eminem’s. Those are the guys that kind of molded my style.

5. WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH IN THE FUTURE?
Umm Alicia Keys - and Jay did that - so now I gotta wait now cuz it’s gon seem kinda corny. I always wanted to work with her though. And like Rich Boy and every time I say that people be like, “Rich Boy?’

NOW HOLD ON NOW, RICH BOY GOES KINDA HARD. I BOUGHT HIS ALBUM! AND WHEN I ACTUALLY LISTENED TO IT, I SAW THAT THIS GUY IS A GREAT LYRICIST AND PEOPLE WAS LOOKIING AT ME LIKE, “WHY IS YOU BUYING THAT?” LOL!
I like him man. He be talking about some shit, he got a message on the low, and shit I’m a fan. And when I tell people they be like, “What? Rich Boy?” But yeah like ummm…Rich Boy and Mos Def, and yo! You know who I like!? I like that nigga Z-Ro!!! I haven’t heard too much, but what I have is so ill!

YEAH YOU GOTTA GET UP ON YOUR Z-RO MAN. THAT GUY IS DEEP…HE IS REALLY DEEP.
He got this song I like that I always play. It goes (busts out into song), “Haters gooot me wroooongs.” I be playing the shit outta that song, but yeah I like people that are not the most obvious. I don’t want the obvious ‘go to’ guys you know like Jeezy. (He) is the obvious. He’s great, and I do want to do a song with Jeezy, but it’s like everybody got a Jeezy song.

6. SO WHEN IS YOUR ALBUM DROPPING? THE J. COLE ALBUM?
It’ll be like early summer…late April early May. But I’m not gon rush it. If it’s not ready to go, then it’ll be later.

7. WHAT’S THE BEST WAY FOR FANS TO KEEP UP WITH YOU?
Ummm…best way for fans to keep up with me is (by) these girls (that) got this fansite man. It’s so good that it’s what my mom checks to keep up with me and that’s how good they are. It’s jcolefans.com. Like they even knew about this Texas tour and I don’t even be telling them…they just be knowing. They know everything…it’s even better than my own website.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR TWITTER? YOU DON’T BE ON THERE?
I don’t really just be on there, but you can still follow me (@JColeNC) because occasionally every couple days I’ll say some random shit.8. WHAT OTHER FORMS OF ART ARE YOU INSPIRED BY?
I would say maybe film, even though I don’t watch as many movies as I wish I did. But yeah sometimes I might watch a movie and come up with a concept or an idea. Just because certain emotions and thoughts will pop up and inspire me. And I’d probably say movies are the other form that inspire me the most. And I’ma start reading more books.

9. SO WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? WHAT YOU GOT GOING ON?
I got finishing the album of course. And I got like this great little marketing scheme (that) I’m not even gonna let it out. (It’s) like a plan and a strategy of how I’ma come out with the album and I’m not gonna even say the name of the album yet.  And people be like, “Oh this nigga not gon say the name of the album,” but shit it’s small to y’all, but it’s major to me. I don’t wanna get on Twitter and just tell the name of the album because it just fucking ruins it.

10. SO HOW YOU LIKE THE H SO FAR?
Well, I mean I ain’t been here but like a couple days.

AND YOU AIN’T SEEN NOTHING AND DONE NOTHING?
I mean naw. I came here when I was like 16 because I got family here and it was fun! I went to this lil teen club and shit…lol…it was fun.

MAN YOU GOTTA COME BACK. H-TOWN IS A REAL REAL NICE PLACE.
I mean yeah I like what I see. Just by looking at how the city looks and mingling with the people…it’s pretty dope.

Miracle Whips: J. Cole Remembers Wishing For A Nissan Pathfinder

nissan

Beammers, Benzs, and Bentleys usually come to mind when one thinks of “dream cars.” Not J. Cole. The North Carolina native may be on his road to riches and diamond rings, but his current automotive tastes are a little more…affordable. To kick off our new column, “Miracle Whips,” J. Cole tells us about the car he hoped to own back when a Roc Nation record deal was still a far-off dream: a Nissan Pathfinder. Seriously. Read on to find out why he pined for a Pathfinder up until college and what his new and improved dream car is. Don’t worry, it costs way more than a Nissan…

J. Cole:Growing up, I was never really a car person. I never knew the types of cars, was never able to say, ‘Oh, that’s a Mercedes CLS, E-Class,’ or ‘That’s a Bimmer 5 series.’ I didn’t know what any of that meant. I just thought some cars were cool. My stepdad bought a Nissan Pathfinder, and he used to always trade it in. You know how some rich people sometimes trade in their Benz for the latest ones? Well, he was trading in the Pathfinder [laughs], but to me he was so cool, and the Pathfinder represented him so well. He had this one all-black Pathfinder and he put 20s on it. Mind you, this guy was like in his mid-30s, pushing 40, mid-life crisis type shit [laughs]. But at the time, me being young, I’m like, ‘Yeah!’ And he had a system in the whip, so I always liked that shit. I wanted to take that shit to my prom! [Laughs.] That’s how ill it was! You know how you get to college and you have a conversation with someone and it comes up, like ‘Yo, what’s your dream car?’ I’d tell people, ‘Man, my dream car is a Nissan Pathfinder [laughs].’ And dudes would look at me so crazy, like, a Nissan Pathfinder?! They were talkin’ about Bentleys and Benzs. It took years, literally years, for me to start wanting something else.”

Complex: What’s your dream car now?

J. Cole: “I don’t have no dream car, It’s still low-key for where I’m at in my life. [Laughs.] My dream car is attainable right now! That’s always been the problem. But, nah, I don’t have a dream car right now, man. A car is the last thing on my mind. You know why? I like taking steps. I couldn’t see myself in a Bentley, ’cause I’m not there yet, I couldn’t do that, so I don’t even like it yet. I saw Wayne’s Bugatti, and I did like that. I ain’t gon’ lie. That shit looked like a real Batmobile. I’ll say that, a Bugatti Veyron. I wouldn’t mind having that.”

J.Cole Interviews With The Fayetteville Observer

Rapper Jermaine Cole has come a long way from his days as an honor roll student and basketball player at Terry Sanford High School. For the past few days, Cole – whose hip-hop nom de plume is J. Cole – has been in Fayetteville filming a music video for the first single, “Who Dat,” off his unnamed debut album. Cole, the first rapper signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, said he told his label it was important to him that his first video be filmed in Fayetteville, his hometown. The filming created a buzz throughout the music community and among his fans, who gathered at a filming location to catch a glimpse of the rapper. Cole, who is 25, has been gaining national attention from hip-hop and mainstream publications, including cover stories on major hip-hop magazines “The Source” and “Vibe.”

The video shoot took place on a secluded block off Worth Street in downtown Fayetteville and featured exploding cars, blistering lyrics and hometown references.”It was real cool that we got to blow up some cars for my first video,” Cole said in an interview after production had wrapped. “Shooting the video was a dream come true. But it was even more special because it almost didn’t happen.” The production costs of transporting filming equipment and crew threatened to derail the project. ”As a new artist, like me, you don’t have a lot of say in where your videos – especially your first – are made,” Cole said. “But they eventually saw it my way, and I couldn’t be more excited or pleased with the final product.”

This time last year, music critics were trying to figure out who the virtually unknown lyricist was and how he became the first artist signed to Roc Nation. Hip-hop enthusiasts quickly realized Cole’s potential when his single, “Lights Please,” from his mixtape “The Warm Up,” hit the airwaves. Now the graduate of St. John’s University is being heralded as one of the rising lyricists to watch in 2010. Despite the pressure and media attention, he said he remains focused on his upcoming album, which he hopes will be released in late summer or early fall. ”I try not to think about what I’ve accomplished,” Cole said. “I don’t dwell on thoughts like, ‘Wow! I did a song with Jay-Z.’ I try to live in the now – and in the future. I’ve got my goals and know what I want to do. You can’t be satisfied; you’ve got to stay hungry.”

Locals have been enthralled by Cole’s dedication to his hometown, which he consistently refers to as “Fayettenam” in his music. And while he is performing to sold-out shows in New York and gaining momentum in his career, he still returns to Fayetteville often. Mike Tech, the programming director for radio station Foxy 99, said Cole will be featured at the Foxy Summer Jam concert this summer. ”I’m proud of how Fayetteville’s grown,” Cole said. “There’s a lot of potential here, and I hope when people see how I’ve been able to reach my dreams, that they’ll be inspired – not just in music, but anything.”

On Tuesday afternoon, a throng of fans and Cole’s friends waited underneath a sheltered porch attached to an abandoned downtown warehouse near the corner of Rankin and Worth streets. It was raining hard. But nothing would deter the crowd from getting the chance to be featured in Cole’s music video. The concept of the video wasn’t clear, but a charred vehicle, smoking from what appeared to be a staged fire, lay about about 200 feet away near the railroad tracks. Shot on 35 mm film – unusual for music videos, which are now almost exclusively filmed digitally – the video was a “one-shot,” Cole said, which meant everything had to be perfect. ”I was nervous with it being a one-shot,” Cole said. “We spent hours just in getting ready. Everything had to be right.”

The Fayetteville State University cheerleading squad was on set, practicing a routine for their cameo in the video.”I’m so happy to be here,” said Erika Maldonado, a 26-year-old student at Fayetteville Technical Community College. Maldonado was one of several callers who won the chance to be featured in the music video through a contest with Foxy 99. ”He’s my favorite rapper,” she said. “What comes out of his mouth is real, and he has a message to deliver.” At one point during filming, Cole jogged through the rain to meet with a crowd of local fans who came to be featured in his video. Many knew Cole personally or had met him at some point. Cole seemed to remember everyone. ”Hey, I met you that one time at the Docks, right?” Cole said to one young man, who nodded enthusiastically. Tech said the video shoot lasted well into the night, but that it was a great experience for everyone involved.”It was a real family-type of atmosphere out there. We pretty much all knew each other, so it worked out, really,” Tech said. “It was a great experience. It was a good look for Fayetteville.”

“J.Cole Is Taking The Nas Approach” -Little Brother’s Big Pooh

Check out what he told SOHH below:

“I like J. Cole,” Pooh told SOHH, “I listen to some of his material and I was kinda late as far as checking him out or whatever, but I think he’s got a chance to really, really, make a mark and an imprint. It’s funny because I didn’t really think about it until I saw Drake say it in an interview but it’s almost like he’s right but it’s almost like Drake is taking the Jay-Z approach and Cole is like, taking the Nas approach on how they’re creating and I kinda see him almost in that mode. I just hope he comes out and he defines his own success and he don’t necessarily worry about putting North Carolina on his back but doing what’s best for J. Cole. If he do that, then North Carolina will be behind him.” (SOHH)
